有一天，太阳快下山了，天空中飘着像血一样红的晚霞。 忽然，“砰”的一声，把树林里的小动物都吓坏了。原来是一个猎人打死了一只正在捕捉咬老树的树虫的啄木鸟。猎人拾起掉在地上的啄木鸟，边走边说：“这是我今天捕的第一只猎物，真不容易呀！”他一挥手，被打死的啄木鸟从猎人的手里掉到了河边。他刚要捡啄木鸟，又发现了一只青蛙，他高兴地说：“第二个猎物来了！”说完，只听见“砰”的一声，青蛙也被猎人打死了。猎人捡起啄木鸟和青蛙，高高兴兴地往家走去。
可是，不知道为什么，猎人总是听见“你为什么打死我！你为什么打死我！”的声音。猎人不当回事，继续往家走去。他回到了家中，又有许多讨厌的虫子来叮咬他。他后悔地说：“我不该打死可怜的啄木鸟和青蛙。”从此以后，他再也不去打猎了。看见有人伤害动物还去管。
