This is not true. In Canada, the green card is Permanent Residence Card, which is used to track new immigrant's total number of days staying in Canada. To apply for citizenship, you will require staying at least 730 days within a five year period.

If you stay outside of canada for a prolong period of time, it does not mean you will lose your PR Card status. Citizenship and Immigration Canada has to take you to court, i.e. Immigration and Refugee Board for the judge to take away your immigration status. If you have a reason to explain why you are away for so long, you will be able to keep your status.
