　　在七十年代中后期发行了另外几张畅销专辑(如《Tonight's the Night》，《Comes a time》，《Rust never sleeps》)之后，Neil Young进入了个人音乐生涯的一段低潮期。在1983年，Young同合作多年老东家Reprise公司分手，转投Geffen公司，而事实证明，这个阶段是Young事业上遭受困难最多的一个时期，这个时期的Young受到德国著名乐队发电站(Kraftwerk)的影响，将电声引入到自己的音乐中，并在专辑中作了不少实验性的作品。虽然在商业上很不成功，但对音乐无比执著的Neil Young并没有放弃音乐。1987年，在Geffen公司发行最后一张专辑《Life》之后，Neil Young毅然决定离开，重新回到Reprise公司的怀抱，并在1989年发行了回归之后的崛起之作《Freedom》，《Freedom》成为继《Rust never sleeps》之后最受舆论好评的专辑。而从1990年的《Ragged Glory》开始，Crazy Horse乐队再次开始和Neil Young合作。另外，此时逐渐走红的一些年轻的乐队如音速青年(Sonic Youth)，声音花园(Soundgarden)和珍珠果酱(Pearl Jam)等都公开表示在他们乐队的成长过程中均受到过Neil Young的影响，而Neil Young也因此获得了“Grunge教父”的美誉。
