铁锈是水、铁、氧三者起氧化作用的结果。水垢是水中的钙镁离子在加热过程中,慢慢的从开水中析出,当水烧开以后,起初以漂浮物的形式存在水表面,如果再持续加热会在水中形成悬浮物,悬浮物沉淀在水底或附着在容器内壁上就形成了水垢

一、水垢及铁绣形成条件
由于水套内有形成铁锈的条件:
第一,水套本身是铸铁制造的;
第二,水本身含有氧气,加之散热器水面低于水套时,水套内就进入空气,这些都是形成铁锈的条件。
当发动机运转后,机体温度升高,更加加速了氧化锈蚀。冷却水是硬水时(即使用的冷却水是自然水,如河水、井水等),水中含有矿物质。当温度升高后,这些矿物质就沉淀,形成水垢。如加软水(如蒸馏水)就不会形成水垢。

二、防止发动机产生水垢及铁绣的措施
  为防止铁锈和水垢的产生,可采取以下几种措施:
  (1)加防锈剂;
  (2)尽可能加软水,加自来水也可;
  (3)保持散热器水面高度,防止空气进入水套,以便减少铁锈的产生;
  (4)为保护冷却系统,最好使用防冻液,否则寒冷天气水结冰易胀破水套;
  (5)应防止散热器漏水,减少加水次数,同时应减少换水次数,防止产生过多的水垢。
  产生水垢和铁锈,在水套内壁和水之间会形成隔热膜,由于其导热性很差,将大大降低冷却效果,发动机产生的热量无法散发出去,不利于其性能的稳定发挥。我们在了解了水垢和铁锈生成的原因之后,就可以预防水垢及铁绣了,减少此类情况再发生,从而保护发动机。
